Recently I’ve returned to creating art using stencils and making videos of the process. I know not everyone has time (or maybe the desire) to watch 20 minute art videos so I thought I’d share photos of the final results.
I completed the Cedar waxwing and viburnum earlier this week. (That video is at the end of this post.) In this piece I traced parts of the stencil with pencil onto watercolor paper, developed the stencil sketch, added color with watercolor pencils and then “activated” the watercolor pencil with a water brush. ( I am posting the full image below - the Substack post thumbnail cut the bird’s head off so I had to make the first image smaller…)
In the second video I used a rubbing technique (frottage) on tracing paper to create the sketch for the American goldfinch and then “painted” it with watercolor crayons. You can see that video here.
The first video in the series I used frottage to create the base sketch for the wren with apple blossoms and then used chalk pastels to add color.
If you watched the videos, thank you so much for taking the time to do so, I really appreciate it, your comments, and your patience while I get better at lighting, sound and editing!
Here’s the Cedar waxwing, this week’s new video. Next week I have plans to continue using the bird stencils to create a spring themed mixed media work just in time for Easter. See you then!
Just gorgeous 💙💫
Already so wonderful and getting better every moment.
